Second-Hand Cell Phone Radiation

Following are excerpts from "On Second-Hand RF Radiation" by former Motorola senior research scientist and technical staff member, Robert C. Kane, Ph.D.

"Radiofrequency
radiation emissions from cellular towers and handsets hold the
potential for increased incidence of long-term medical effects, but of
equal importance are the immediate effects of exposure to the radiation.

Unlike
second-hand cigarette or cigar smoke, exposure to which has been linked
to life threatening and debilitating diseases, radiofrequency radiation
exposure has, to date, successfully avoided the issue of passive
personal exposure.

But, in fact, recent research has demonstrated
that even short-term exposure to radiation power densities emanating
from a nearby cellular telephone is sufficient to modify brainwave
patterns, affect short-term memory, and modify an individual's ability
to perform physical tasks such as driving an automobile.

Radiation
emanating from a portable cellular telephone... propagates through the
entire environment surrounding the radiating antenna of the phone.
....every time someone in an automobile next to you activates his
cellular phone or whenever someone at a nearby table in a restaurant at
which you are having lunch activates her phone your brain is being
radiated.

The issue of secondhand tobacco smoke might have been
resolved many years ago if adequate research had been performed to
support the complaints of objecting parties. In the instance of
radiofrequency radiation the research has already been completed. The
body of available research indicates that operation of a nearby
portable cellular telephone will expose a non-user to radiation, some
of which will be deposited into the brain of the non-user, at levels
higher than necessary to elicit undesirable biological effects even
though the phone may be more then ten feet away from the non-user.

....after
that cellular phone user leaves the scene he leaves behind, within the
brain ofeach and every nearby person, the residual effects and damage.
These are effects and damage known to the scientific community but not
acknowledged by the industry placing their products into the commercial
stream."

Please be aware that the
exposure is increased when a cell phone is used inside a metal
structure, such as an elevator or a vehicle, that reflects the
radiation back into the occupied area.

I now carry an Electrosmog Detector with
me, which I turn on if someone begins to expose me to the radiation
from their cellphone. As the Detector lets you "hear" the radiation,
this gets the cell-phone user's attention right away. I look the person
in the eye and say "That is the radiation from your phone, to which I
am being exposed." The caller's eyes usually get big and round, and
they tend to move away from me rapidly.

The
first time my husband was present when I did this, in the vegetable
section of our natural foods co-op, he was embarrassed. I said "Why
should I meekly allow someone to expose me to radiation?" and he got
it.

Of course, there are some
situations in which one would probably not want to do this. If I were
in a "rough," sparsely-populated area, I'd probably just hustle away,
myself.

Living by cell phone antennae/towers/masts

Following are excerpts from a Power Watch piece about the effects of living near cell phone antennae/towers/masts. These are the comments of Dr Bill Curry, a USA-based EMF bio-effects expert.

The...symptoms from which Ena Bambrough suffered until her death...sound to me like part of the microwave sickness syndrome [See symptoms of high frequency illness.] that Russian scientists studied over a period of 40 years of observations of people who worked around sources of RF radiation.

...These scientists..stated that the early phases of the syndrome are reversible, but that over time it becomes LETHAL.

.... Having seen a resident of Vienna whose apartment is right across the street from a cell phone antenna installation and whose legs are red as boiled lobsters legs, I am a believer in the deleterious effects of microwave radiation.

Having also witnessed what the radiation has done to people on a scenic ridge in upstate New York that puts them almost on eye-level with directional cell phone antennas on a tower rising from the base of the ridge, my realization that the medical profession will eventually have to acknowledge the existence of RF sickness is strengthened.

.... One lady (in her early forties) on that ridge has suffered internal bleeeding around the periphery of her brain - hemmorhagic stroke....An even younger man on that ridge suffered a stroke at age 39.... On the same ridge, I witnessed people suffering from the blinding headaches and the tinitus that afflicted the late Ena Bambrough in the U.K.

These people...began to notice the symptoms about 6 weeks after the cell tower began operation in early 1997.

...The symptoms were present, when I visited, at radiation levels no higher than 25 microwatts per square centimeter on a day when the residents said the raidiaton was light.

These people often have to sleep in their car miles away from the cell phone tower. At home, they cant sleep on some bad nights. On the same ridge, dogs had come down with tumors and died.

While there undoubtedly is an effect of genetic variability, I am fairly well convinced .... that anyone subjected to microwave radiation on a chronic basis will eventually become electrosensitive.

I know a couple in California who live in the coastal Mendocino Mountains and are apparently affected by scatter or spillover from a Pave Paws radar beam whose source is 150 miles away near Sacramento. The state health department wont touch this issue (because of the Air Forces involvement) and they dismiss it as being impossible because of the distance. In this family, the father and mother have suffered from a variety of illnesses such as those I have previously mentioned, but both children have had forms of cancer. One had leukemia, and the other had a non-malignant brain tumor removed. ...When these people have driven away from home and traveled to the areas that are shadowed from the radar, their symptoms have ceased.

Because our government is so blinded by the absurd notion that only biological heating is important, they completely ignore what pulses do to biological cells....

...I just cannot countenance the official blindness of government institutions that are supposed to protect the populace, but, instead, act as promotional agencies. The FCC and similar organizations in other countries should be split into an agency which promotes the technology and an independent, separately funded agency whose only fucntion is to regulate providers of the technology and to protect the public.

EMR/EMF mapping

Using government-provided information, a UK group has created maps of the EMF and EMR that people are exposed to in the Red Lomes area.

   There are separate maps illustrating exposures from electrical transmissions lines and the various types of communications signal broadcasting towers, which the English call "masts." The last map combines all these exposures, making it clear indeed what an extremely hostile environment these combined exposures create.

   Would you want to live someplace with this kind of exposure?   Perhaps you do!

   If anyone is aware of such mapping done for any portion of the USA, please let me know and I'll post it.

"Cell Tower" Balloons

Following are some excerpts from a recent Yahoo News article about "cell tower" balloons.

Cell towers are expensive, costing from $100,000 to more than $1 million to set up. They also present logistical problems, such as clearing local regulations and finding suitable placement.

Space Data uses standard weather balloons, which cost about $50 each, to carry special purpose cell towers. These towers are small -- 10 cubic inches -- and light -- less than 12 pounds. The balloons travel 20 miles above the earth, well above commercial airliner pathways. Because of their highflying position, the devices cover a larger area -- from 50 miles to 500 miles -- than traditional cell towers.

"Now that carriers have deployed cell stations throughout metropolitan areas, they are searching for ways to reach more remote locations, like Montana, as well as camp sites and parks," said Neil Strother, an analyst at market research firm NPD Group.

The approach is expected to take root first in areas that are far off main highways or away from cities.

In other words, the very places that people have moved to to get away from such exposure.

Offending celltower to be moved!

As reported in the Bradford Expositor, after a five-hour debate on June 6th in which people living near a celltower tower in Siomcoe, Canada described its effects on their health, the councillors of Norfolk County have decided to move the recently-installed tower.

As per usual, a representative of the cell tower company assured everyone that the tower was operating within guidelines set by Health Canada and Industry Canada and that there no conclusive evidence linking radio frequency waves with illness, adding "The alleged fear can be mitigated by the guidelines."

If you are not aware of the absurdity of present guidelines, please see the section on "Safety standards" in the Notes on the Health Effects of Manmade Electromagnetic Frequencies here on my site.

If you are not aware that research has definitely shown the effects of EMR exposure, see the Resarch section of the same Notes, particularly the section titled "proximity to communications towers."

To refer to the fear of the affected residents', who clearly described their symptoms and shared their thoughts in the hearing, as "alleged" is truly adding insult to injury.

This time, local residents were well informed and able to convince their councillors that the mitigation needed called for moving the tower, not applying the snake oil of industry reassurances.

One councilman who voted to move the tower warned that this might be the start of similar requests from other county residents who live near cell towers. And well it should be!

Effect Of FM Signal On Animals, Birds, Humans

Penny Hargreaves observes the effect of local FM signal on animals, birds, humans.

She notes fungi and lichen growing on trees in correspondence to their exposure to specific beams of FM signal. The fungi and lichen prosper increasingly as the trees weaken and die

     Penny also reports on the effect on earthworms, mice, birds, bees, wasps, frogs, etcetera.   As towers come and go, these creatures disappear/reappear.

     One of Penny's interesting observations is that when FM exposure increased, rabbits, which previously avoided areas where dogs live, came and lived under the barns, whose corrugated iron siding shielded their burrows from the signals.

     People living in the area have also been severely affected.

Traffic accident RISKS while using a cellular phone

According to research published in the New England Journal of Medicine,
the risk of having a traffic accident while using a cellular phone is the same as that of having an accident while driving drunk. Cell phone users who talk while driving are four to five hundred percent more likely to get into traffic accidents than those who do not.

Another study (Violanti, 1998, case-control study of data from 223,137 traffic crashes in Oklahoma from 1992 - 1995) found a nine-fold increase in the risk of traffic accident fatality given the use of a cellular telephone.

Japan banned driving while using a cell phone after a study found the number of traffic accidents related to the phones increased by 11 percent from 1997 to 1998. In the first month after the law went into effect, the number of accidents caused by drivers using cell phones fell by about 75 percent.

Australia, Spain, Israel, Portugal, Italy, Brazil, Chile, Switzerland, Great Britain, Singapore, Taiwan, Sweden, Japan, and Austria have passed similar bans.

Last year I was a passenger in a vehicle that rolled over at interstate highway speed, due to the driver being engaged in a business call on his phone. We both walked away from the scene with no major injuries, but my skull bones had become jammed together and several treatments by an osteopath were required to set me straight and end the head, ear and neck pain that began a few days after the accident.

If we had not been wearing seat belts, I have no doubt the outcome would not have been so good. As it is, we were darned lucky.

I now refuse to ride with a driver on the phone. If I'm going to be a passenger with someone, I discuss it before we depart. (In fact, I establish that NOBODY will be using a phone in the car, as the radiation bounces back from the frame of the vehicle, creating a microwave oven effect.)

The next time you think you need to make a call while driving, ask yourself first: "Is it to die for?"

Irradiated K-5 School Closing

As reported in a Santa Cruz Sentinel article, a Santa Cruz K-5 school is closing because of cell tower radiation. Two interesting points are that the offending transmitters are sited in a church tower, and that many microwave towers these days are disguised as trees, billboards, etcetera. Its possible that your childs school playground or your favorite campground now hosts a microwave tower disguised as a tree.

The only way to know is to check for yourself. This is why I decided to offer the Electrosmog Detector, described in the Products pages.

When we travel I always take an Electrosmog Detector along, to help us find motels that are not hit by radiation from a cell tower. The major motels along the main throughways are bad risks, and almost all of them now have WiFi as well. We find healthier motels by exiting the throughway and driving through an adjacent small town. These motels are less expensive, and support private owners as well.

Electromagnetic Hypersensitivity

Electrical Sensitivity and Electromagnetic Hypersensitivity are terms describing a condition that research indicates at least 3% of us suffer from quite intensely, with perhaps another 30% suffering milder symptoms. Sweden and the UK have officially recognized EHS as a physical impairment. The California Dept. of Health Services did a survey in 1998 indicating that 120,000 California residents were so disabled by electromagnetic pollution that they were unable to work.

Dr. Magda Havas's article, which appeared in the View From Trent, helps us understand what it's like to be ES/EHS.

Cell Phone Headaches, Cell Tower Blues

Imagine a world identical to our own with one exception - everyone is deaf. There is no radio and television remains at the level of the silent movie. Telephone communication is visual but beyond that the world is very much like our own.

What would such a world be like?

It would probably be very noisy, since there would be no need for noise control and no regulations to limit noise. Car engines would still roar, perhaps louder than they do now, tires would squeal, birds would sing, and thunder would rumble across the sky but we would not be able to hear any of this.

Now, imagine that some people in this world can hear. They don't realize they are any different except in a few subtle ways. They can predict the coming of storms. They claim to "hear" thunder at a distance. They have difficulty sleeping. In the middle of the night they hear roaring engines, squealing tires, horns blaring and other things that are silent to the rest of us. Because of their poor sleep, they are tired during the day. They become anxious and worried. The noise frightens them but only they can hear it so they begin to question their sanity.

One sufferer, John, confides in a friend who is sympathetic and tells him to visit his family doctor. But the doctor doesn't know what to make of this. The sleeping pills and tranquilizers she prescribes don't stop the noise during the day. Another, less sympathetic doctor recommends a psychiatrist for mental problems. But John doesn't think he's crazy, or is he?

Now, instead of noise, imagine a world where people can't sense radio frequency energy. That is the world we live in. We hear radio frequencies only when they are converted to sound by our radios, televisions, or telephones. If we could hear them this would be a very noisy planet. In the middle of a street in any major city you would hear thousands of simultaneous telephone conversations, hundreds of radio and television stations. It would probably drive most of us crazy.

Fortunately most of us can't "hear" radio frequencies, but some people can sense them. And just like in our make believe world of the deaf, the few individuals who can sense these frequencies can't sleep, develop headaches, and are under constant stress.

The syndrome is called "Electromagnetic Hypersensitivity" and some people are gravely affected. Those who see their doctor are often dismissed, given sleeping pills or sent to a psychiatrist. These people are not crazy. They just happen to be more sensitive than the rest of us to the electromagnetic noise pollution generated by our technological advances.

Below is a quote from a man in Abbotsford, B.C. who has some of the classic symptoms of Electromagnetic Hypersensitivity Syndrome.

"We live one property away from a cell phone tower and have another a half mile down the road... I have been having strange unexplained health issues for three or four years that conventional medical tests cannot solve. Along with these I developed cancer on my right breast when a brown spot that had been there for 35 years suddenly went bad. The following are symptoms that have been occurring over a period of time since these towers were installed and have had no relief to date: headaches, nausea, unsteadiness, pressure in head over eyes, ears, cheeks and back of head. Sometimes blurred vision. General feeling of fatigue and aches for no apparent reason. Have undergone complete blood workup, X-ray, CT Scan. Have tried various alternative medical practices, chiropractic, acupuncture, herbal remedies, exercise, watching diet closer, lose weight and drinking plenty of water. Nothing seems to work. Don't know if the towers are responsible for the above mentioned but I do feel somewhat better when I leave the area for a period of time."

Electromagnetic hypersensitivity has not yet been accepted by our medical professionals. Just like chronic fatigue syndrome, chemical hypersensitivity, and seasonal affective disorder (SAD) it will take some time and many complaining patients before that changes. In the meantime, those suffering need to reduce their exposure to radio frequency radiation not a simple thing to do in our highly technical society.

Our government can play a vital role by restricting the installation of antennas for cell phones on high rise buildings and by increasing the distance of cell phone and broadcast antennas on towers near built up areas. We need "cell phone restricted" areas on trains, buses, and in buildings that have regular phone lines. The levels allowed for radio frequency radiation need to be reduced. Our guidelines are among the worst in the world, along with Great Britain, the U.S.A., Germany and Japan. The more we come to rely on the cell phone, the more antennas that are needed for their use. We have more than 300 transmitting antennas in the City of Peterborough. In Toronto, the number exceeds 10,000 and most were erected since 1980. There is some evidence to suggest that as our exposure to electromagnetic energy increases so will our sensitivity. Pregnancy Success Follows EMR Reduction

I have just received the following.

"I wanted to give you some good news. My wife and I have been trying to
get pregnant for the past two years, and we have succeeded!

Infertility was one of my motivations for attending your seminar. We
started to gradually reduce our electrical pollution in our home. My wife
used to spend 10 plus hours a day in her office upstairs next to her
computer, so electrical pollution was always a concern as to why she may be
having miscarriages. It wasn't until I purchased the wireless detector that
we realized that her phone was putting out a lot of energy. The phone is a
4 line corded phone with cordless capability of 8 or more cordless handsets.

We then put Filosano Fabric over the phone to shield her. Two weeks later
Kristin was pregnant. That phone has now been replaced with a corded only
phone.

Her office is a small room upstairs, which seemed to have made the
pollution worse because it would bounce off the walls. Also, she would
sometimes spend a lot of time up there working on her internet business with
the phone right next to her on the desk. With the amount of energy that
phone seemed to have been putting off with the drastic change in fertility,
it seems logical to us there may have been a correlation between the two.

Swedish Research Links Cell Phones, Brain Tumors

Below are excerpts from Nate Anderson's article "Swedish Research Links Cell Phones, Brain Tumors."

"...the Swedish National Institute for Working Life...has just completed a massive study on the cancer risks from cell phone use....The study looked at 2,200 cancer patients and the same number of healthy ones to see if any sort of connection could be drawn between specific cancers and heavy mobile phone usage. The answer was yes. ....heavy users of mobile phones had a 240 percent increased risk of a malignant tumor on the side of the head the phone is used.

.... 'heavy usage' of cell phones is defined by the study as anything above 2,000 hours of use....

[A teenager spending 2 hours a day on the phone would total 2,000 hours in less than 3 years.]

The study's authors suggest....a hands-free system."

[Hollow-air tube systems deliver no radiation to your brain. In contrast, ordinary headsets may deliver 3 times more radiation to your head than the phone would. Never mind the PR of various wired systems. It's your brain. Test your listening system. And remember that any wires involved are another source of radiation. An Electrosmog Detector is a good tool for this job, for phones with frequencies up to 3 GHz.]
